How to make Challah Roses

A beautiful way to decorate challah - for any special occasion!

  • To make about 6-8 flowers for your challah, you will need: 300 grams of dough, rolling pin, parchment paper, a round cookie cutter (approx. 3”), knife or bench scraper.

  • Roll out your dough with a rolling pin, to about 1/8” thick. You can roll between 2 pieces of parchment if that’s easier for you. If it springs back, let it rest a few minutes. You can also refrigerate it once it’s rolled out, if it seems too soft.

  • Using a round cookie cutter (~3”), cut as many circles as you can, as close together as possible.

  • 6 circles will make 2 roses.

  • To form the roses, line up 6 circles overlapping about 35-50% as illustrated in the photo below.

  • Roll them up, starting on the end with the first circle under the others. Roll tightly, pressing in the center as you roll.

  • Cut the roll in half to make 2 roses.

  • Place on top of your braid. No need to add egg wash to make it stick. As the dough rests, the roses will stick to the braid.
